History

The Wayne State University (WSU) Office for Teaching and Learning (OTL) opened its doors in 1996. The OTL grew out of the strategic planning process associated with WSU's goal of attaining Carnegie Research 1 status and a series of faculty-led initiatives related to affirming excellence in undergraduate teaching (e.g., evaluation of teaching, the incorporation of emerging education technologies, and the contractual implementation of teaching portfolios for promotion and tenure). To avoid the perception of a conflict of interest, the OTL initially reported to the dean of University Libraries. In 2000, the organization chart was changed to align the OTL directly with the Office of the Provost. Originally located in the Undergraduate Library, the OTL is now located in the Purdy / Kresge Graduate Library.
